Deaconal Shotgun

[The Setting]

Its not every day that you get the opportunity to help strangers in an obvious way.

A woman that I know tangentially from work lost her ex-husband recently.

Her (and his daugters) were trying to get all his things out of his rented residence back to their mom's house. They didn't have trucks readily available, so I offered the use of some of my friends trucks for moving their appliances.

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Well, it took me a few days to get the necessary crew (two church guys and trucks) together for retrieving the appliances from said residence.

So, its Wednesday, and we are all ready to go after work. About 5:30 ish.

Then I return from lunch and the woman with the daughters beckons me and has me call one of her daughters. The daughters want to go with us, as them seem very sensitive to strangers being at their dad's house without them there. Easy enough to understand, I guess.

Then the phone conversation gets interesting. The landlord has cut the power to the place and is insisting on keeping the appliances as 'rent' which apparently the now-deceased dad owed.

And, of course, the landlord lives on the property, so there's no getting around him. Things are getting hairier by the minute.

As it turns out, one of the guys is a little delayed from work, and we will be doing everything in the black of night, with only a few flashlights. We will be getting some stranger's appliances from a property that is not theirs, but belongs to a man who insists that he rightfully owns the appliances.

After weighing the story and trying to figure out the legal and ethical ramifications of what is going on; it becomes apparent to me that it is time for the Deaconal Shotgun.
